Funded by the Northumberland Coast National Landscape, ‘Coastal Class Names’ marks Amble Links’s recent change from a first to a primary school.
All eight classes have been given new names celebrating the wildlife living in and around Amble. From Nursery to Year 6, the classes have been renamed as: Starfish, Lobsters, Jellyfish, Puffins, Seals, Terns, Herons and Curlews.
The children are working on paintings and clay models inspired by the wildlife species, while learning about their identifying features and how they can be protected too.
Katherine also grew up in Amble and attended the same school in the 1970s. She explains: “I saw this project as the perfect opportunity to use art across a whole school to help children learn about the wildlife and habitats that they may well come across when venturing out of their homes."
Based on the artwork produced, Katherine will then create a different logo to be displayed on every classroom door.
Katherine shares: “It has been wonderful to see the children carefully observing the features of their bird or animal while producing stunning watercolour paintings. They have also made beautiful clay models that have been created with great attention to detail.”
When the project is complete, the artwork will be exhibited in the school and in the wider community.
Amble is a gateway town to the Northumberland Coast National Landscape, with this designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty beginning at the Coquet Estuary and running to just below Berwick-upon-Tweed.
