A Victorian promenade, family-friendly beach and lovely views across the estuary to Berwick-upon-Tweed
Spittal village stands on the south bank of the Tweed and it became a seaside resort because of its lovely sandy beach. The Victorian promenade and 'Venetian' pavilion, built in 1928, give the beach a traditional feel and it is a popular place for a classic day out.
The coast at Cocklawburn is of great geological interest, with large folding saddlebacks of sedimentary rock creating gullies, rock pools and rocky platforms. Pink sandstone and fossil-rich limestone can be seen, with remains of crinoids and brachiopods from millions of years ago visible. Today, the landscape provides a perfect habitat for marine life. It's an excellent place for rockpooling, but take care not to damage the homes of any creatures you find.
