Ensuring the coast remains a beautiful place for future generations to enjoy

Conservation Team volunteers undertake skilled and varied tasks throughout the Northumberland Coast National Landscape. They carry out ecological surveys and practical conservation, maintain habitats for wildlife, and keep our beaches free of litter.  All volunteers are provided with full training and the equipment and resources they need to care for the landscape.

The Conservation Team is a powerful, positive community offering joyful camaraderie, with members often talking about the wellbeing benefits they experience, alongside the conservational importance of their work. Together, they help to ensure that the Northumberland Coast National Landscape is a clean, beautiful place for current and future generations to enjoy.

“It’s a dream come true to be doing such varied activities in the name of conservation. Volunteering brings real positivity to my life and it’s a gift to be able to help this way."

Partnership working

The Conservation Team also offers support to organisations including the National Trust, and partners like ranger service Space for Shorebirds

Some examples of this partnership working have been assisting the National Trust team on Inner Farne with preparation for breeding season, building a fence at the Long Nanny shorebird site and doing 'chick watch' sessions on behalf of Space for Shorebirds.

Space for Shorebirds Senior Ranger Richard Willis said: “Delivering a coast-wide beach nesting bird protection scheme simply would not be possible without the countless hours of support from the Northumberland Coast Conservation Team volunteers. I have no doubt that there are Ringed Plover alive now that would not have fledged as chicks without their commitment and passion.”
